HAM develops an innovative, compact, and energy-efficient liquefaction plant for local Bio-LNG production
Project co-financed by the European Union
HAM Group and HAM Criogénica have successfully developed the NANO BIOGAS LIQUIFIER R&D project, focused on designing and validating a next-generation compact plant for the local production of Bio-LNG (renewable liquefied natural gas) from biogas. This advanced technological solution enables the conversion of biogas generated by small-scale biodigesters into a competitive renewable fuel, fostering sustainability across the transport and agri-livestock sectors.

The primary objective of the project is to deliver a modular, “plug & play” liquefaction unit capable of processing biogas with outstanding energy efficiency. This innovation facilitates the replacement of fossil LNG with renewable Bio-LNG in applications such as heavy transport, directly contributing to decarbonisation goals through the use of renewable biofuels, while enhancing the economic viability of small agricultural producers.
The development of the NANO BIOGAS LIQUIFIER involved a total investment of €1,043,474, co-financed by the European Union (FEDER / CDTI) with a contribution of €720,205.75. The project has delivered highly satisfactory results, validating a standardised modular solution for biomethane liquefaction and developing an innovative cryogenic compander that enables real Bio-LNG production under simulated field conditions.
The compact liquefaction plant features a highly competitive energy design and is fully containerised for easy transport and rapid deployment in rural areas. The unit is engineered for remote, automated operation via integrated SCADA systems and PLCs, providing a flexible, scalable solution for the decentralised production of renewable LNG.

About ERDF / CDTI:
The European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) provides funding to public and private entities throughout the European Union to help reduce economic, social, and territorial disparities. The Fund supports investments through national or regional programs designed to address the specific needs of each territory.
The ERDF operates under shared management between the European Commission and the national, regional, and local authorities of Member States, which approve and implement projects aligned with local priorities.
In line with the objectives of the European Green Deal, all R&D&I investments supported by the ERDF must be environmentally sustainable, driving Europe’s transition towards a greener economy.
