100% vehicular Bio LNG — Faenza Biomethane
The HAM Group and HAM Italia have developed one of Europe’s largest 100% vehicle biomethane plants in Faenza, Italy, with an estimated annual capacity of 9 million kilos, equivalent to 140GWh/year.
The project is based on the biogas generated by 2 digesters owned by the Italian wine cooperative Caviro SpA, that recover by-products derived from the wine and agri-food chain and transform them into biogas.
The organic materials are collected and fed into the biogas plant or biodigester, where a series of micro-organisms degrade them to produce nitrate-rich fertiliser and biogas, which is made up of 60% methane and 40% CO2. This biogas passes through modular upgrading equipment, which purifies it to CO2 contents below 50ppm, suitable for liquefaction through a liquefaction train to obtain Bio LNG, ready to be transported to refuelling stations.
Advantages of biomethane in Faenza
This project contributes to the circular economy, favouring the local economy, generating employment, returning resources and nutrients to the soil, and acting as a sustainable alternative to incineration or landfill. It also allows for energy independence, as it does not have to depend on international markets or large corporations, with a major supply terminal in Italy.
The 100% vehicle biomethane plant in Faenza, which runs on electricity from renewable sources, will reduce the road traffic of the LNG tankers with which HAM Italia currently supplies northern Italy from the port terminals by more than 600,000 km/year, thus reducing road traffic in general as well as CO2 emissions.
